Eliminating Non-Machining Downtime

How Can a Dual-Station APC for Vertical Lathes Create a High-Utilization Manufacturing Cell?

In the turning of large disc-shaped parts, flanges, slewing bearings, wind-turbine gearbox housings, and high-rigidity ring components, lengthy workpiece loading and clamping times and machine stoppages are major constraints on the productivity and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) of high-value vertical lathes.

With conventional single-table machines, the costly spindle must remain idle while heavy workpieces weighing several tons are changed and time-consuming alignment checks are performed.

Drawing on its extensive expertise in large rotary mechanisms and automated changeover technology, PARKSON (Bao Jia Cheng Industrial) introduces the Vertical APC Automatic Pallet Changer for Vertical Lathes. By separating machining from workpiece loading/unloading and positioning/alignment, the system combines exceptional rigidity, high-precision repeatable positioning, and safety interlocks to move large vertical lathes toward efficient, flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) capable of continuous unmanned operation.

Key Features and Technical Advantages

1. Dual-Station Exchange Architecture: Machining and Preparation in Parallel (Zero Spindle Idle Time)

  • External preparation station eliminates machine waiting time: Workpiece loading/unloading, overhead-crane lifting and positioning, fixture clamping, and preliminary inspection can all be performed simultaneously at an external preparation station. This allows spindle machining to continue without interruption, converting waiting time into productive cutting time.
  • Significantly shorter changeover time (cycle time): Once a machining cycle is complete, the high-speed automatic transfer mechanism rapidly exchanges the occupied and prepared pallets. Overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) can be significantly improved by 35%–60%.
  • Reduced operator fatigue and operating risk: Heavy components are loaded and unloaded at an open external station, improving crane access and ergonomics while reducing occupational safety risks from repeated entry into confined machine enclosures.

2. Heavy-Duty, High-Rigidity Guidance and Dual-Contact Precision Taper Positioning: No Displacement During Heavy Cutting and Accurate Repeated Exchanges

  • Vibration-resistant, high-rigidity guide structure: The exchange carriage and support base use high-strength ductile cast iron and heavy-load linear guides/high-rigidity roller assemblies, maintaining excellent dynamic vibration damping even under eccentric, unevenly distributed loads of several tons during heavy cutting.
  • High-repeatability dual-contact taper locating pins: The pallet docking interface uses precision-ground, dual-contact taper locating pins and high-rigidity taper bushings to eliminate minute docking clearances and maintain micrometer-level (μm) positioning repeatability through repeated exchanges.
  • Multi-taper seating verification with air-gap sensors: High-pressure air blasts remove chips from the locating surfaces, while pneumatic seating detection circuits prevent trapped metal particles from tilting the pallet, ensuring proper contact with the base at every exchange.

3. High-Clamping-Force Hydraulic Locking and Intelligent Full-Interlock Protection

  • Uniform hydraulic pull-down clamping around the perimeter: Built-in high-pressure hydraulic cylinders and multi-point heavy-duty disc springs/mechanical force-multiplying clamps provide extremely high clamping force, described as being in the tens-of-thousands-of-newtons (kN) range in the source, preventing micro-movement during interrupted heavy cutting.
  • Full-stroke sensor closed-loop control and safety interlocks: Proximity switches, travel-position sensors, and pressure sensors monitor lifting/lowering position, transfer locking, clamping confirmation, and pallet anti-rotation. Comprehensive electrical/hydraulic interlocks help prevent incorrect operation and collisions.
  • Highly flexible modular design for FMS expansion: Standard communication interfaces (I/O and EtherCAT) enable integration with shop-floor MES, AGV/RGV transport vehicles, gantry cranes, and articulated robots for intelligent unmanned production lines.
