How Hydraulic Material Handling Equipment Is Supporting the Next Phase of India’s Infrastructure Growth

…by Akshay Agarwal, Manging Director, JEHEL

Stand near any major infrastructure site in India today- a highway stretch, a metro corridor, a new industrial cluster- and you’ll notice a quiet common thread running through all of it. Somewhere in the background, hydraulic machinery is doing the heavy lifting, quite literally, making sure materials move exactly where they need to, exactly when they’re needed. It’s not the part of infrastructure that ever makes the news. But honestly, it might be one of the most important parts of the story unfolding in 2026.

There’s something almost poetic about it, if you stop to think about it. Every steel beam that finds its way to the top of a bridge, every tonne of aggregate that reaches a site on schedule, every container that gets unloaded at a port without a hitch, all of it rests on hydraulic power working quietly, precisely, reliably, somewhere just out of frame. As India builds faster than it ever has, this often-overlooked layer of capability is becoming genuinely central to how that story gets told.

A Market Genuinely on the Move

The numbers here are worth sitting with for a moment. India’s hydraulic equipment market is estimated to reach around USD 2.88 billion in 2026, according to Fortune Business Insights, placing India among the more significant contributors to global hydraulic equipment revenue. Zooming out to material handling equipment more broadly, the picture gets even bigger: Mordor Intelligence data shows India’s overall construction equipment market growing from USD 8.55 billion in 2025 to USD 9.24 billion in 2026, on its way to USD 13.61 billion by 2031. These aren’t abstract figures sitting in some analyst’s spreadsheet; they’re a direct reflection of just how much building is actually happening across the country right now.

Why Infrastructure Is Leaning So Heavily on Hydraulics

It helps to understand what’s really driving this demand. According to Mordor Intelligence, infrastructure projects alone commanded 42.78% of India’s construction equipment market in 2025, powered in large part by the National Infrastructure Pipeline, a USD 1.4 trillion programme accelerating orders for earthmoving, road-building, and material-handling machinery. Government initiatives like the Pradhan Mantri Gati Shakti programme and the Smart Cities Mission are pushing forward large-scale urban development, road expansion, and metro rail networks, all of which lean on hydraulic excavators, loaders, cranes, and drilling rigs to keep material handling and earthmoving genuinely efficient.

Smarter, Cleaner, More Capable Machines

What’s genuinely exciting about this moment is just how much more capable hydraulic equipment has become. IMARC Group’s research points to growing adoption of electro-hydraulic systems, offering higher efficiency, sharper precision, and more economical energy use, alongside a rising wave of smart hydraulic solutions built with IoT connectivity and predictive maintenance built right in. This means today’s equipment isn’t just doing heavier lifting; it’s doing smarter lifting, quietly catching maintenance needs before they turn into downtime, and running leaner on energy while doing it for the people operating this machinery every day. That translates into fewer surprises, less unplanned downtime, and equipment that genuinely gets better at its job with every passing year.

Where the Growth Is Concentrated

The regional story here is just as interesting as the national one. Mordor Intelligence data shows South India leading with a 32.12% share of India’s construction equipment market, while North-East India is projected to grow fastest, at a 12.74% CAGR through 2031, a sign that infrastructure momentum is genuinely spreading well beyond the country’s traditional industrial belts. By power output, equipment above 400 HP is expected to grow at an impressive 11.76% CAGR, a clear reflection of the shift toward heavier, more capable machinery built for larger, more ambitious projects.

Ownership Models Are Evolving Too

Another encouraging shift is in how this equipment actually reaches the ground. While contractor-owned fleets still dominate, holding a 71.48% share in 2025, rental fleets are growing fastest, at a 12.69% CAGR through 2031. That flexibility matters; it means more contractors, including smaller and mid-sized ones who might never have afforded this equipment outright, can now access modern hydraulic machinery without a high upfront cost, quietly extending the reach of quality equipment across a much broader base of infrastructure projects.

The Cranes and Lifting Segment Leading the Way

Within material handling specifically, cranes and lifting equipment consistently stand out as the largest, most consequential segment, and honestly, for good reason. From placing heavy structural components on a metro viaduct to unloading bulk material at a busy port, this category of equipment quietly holds together some of India’s most visible infrastructure milestones. It’s the segment that shows up, quite literally, at the centre of nearly every large build, steadying everything else while the rest of the project comes together around it.

A Foundation Built for What Comes Next

What ties all of this together is a simple, encouraging truth: India’s infrastructure ambitions are only ever as strong as the equipment quietly holding them up. Each kilometre of highway, each new metro link, each factory construction is backed by hydraulic material handling equipment which is reliable, efficient and more intelligent every day. As the infrastructure project pipeline of India grows bigger and bigger throughout 2026 and beyond, this ever-present layer of hydraulic power continues to do what it does best, project by project, lift by lift, helping build the future of India.

As India’s infrastructure ambitions continue to grow, JEHEL is playing a sterling role by delivering reliable hydraulic material-handling and rock-breaking solutions for the evolving needs of the sector.
